The vessel ran aground on the 22nd January near Deschaillons on the St Lawrence Riber however no spills were reported.

The port received its largest ship on the 20th January 2016 with the Maersk Antwerp Trader arriving from Colombia with a cargo of bananas. This is an important milestone for the port.

APM Terminals and Colombian port terminal have finalised  the inforporatoin of Cartagena Container Terminal with an expected throughput of 250,000 TEU along with 1.5 millon tons of general cargo.

It has been reported that the port will not be ready to take post Panamax vessels within the 2 year expected timescales. There is now no urgent attempt to dredge the harbour.

‘Horrendous’ wait for Forth Road Bridge to reopen to HGVs


The Scottish Government must “come clean” over when the Forth Road Bridge will fully reopen to relieve the “horrendous” waiting game for businesses, says a Fife MSP.

HGVs are still not allowed to use the Fife to Edinburgh crossing because of ongoing repairs to a crack found in a key section of the bridge in early December.

While cars have been able to use the bridge since December 23, the Transport Minister has only offered a timescale of mid-February for access to return for lorries.

M.V Dophin II - 20 containers lost overboard












The incident occurred during rough weather in the North Pacific. It was necessary for the ship to change course to avoid further loss. This is a good reason to have marine insurance along with the correct incoterm.

M.V. Flinter America - fire in engine room 

The vessel went adrift off the island of Alderney. There were no injuries reported.


M.V Spirit of Tasmania 2 diverted due to a medical emergency on board

The vessel was forced to return to Melbourne at 9am to meet an ambulance awaiting at the port.

The vessel just avoided grounding when she left Xiamen. The vessel suddenly went of course and was heading towards shallow waters. It was fortunate that the Vessel Traffic operators were able to warn them in time to avoid this becoming a serious matter.

It has been reported that  on the Jan 18, 2016, around 8 a.m. the "Coral Lophelia", travelling from from Terneuzen to Hamina, was in collision with the cargo vessel "Karmel"

Port News










The Port Authority of Singapore has announced fifteen container vessels at the port will receive an additional 10% discount on port dues if they are carrying out cargo works with a port stay of not more than five days. The discount will stay in operation for the next twelve months and is in addition to existing concessions.


Santos











Several vessels carrying chemicals at the terminal have caught fire which is restricting movements at the port. Emergency operations are in place and the terminal has been evacuated.

Port of Matadi  (Deomocratic Reblubic of the Congo) 

 











The International Container Terminal Services is set to open a £700m  new terminal in the the Democratic Republic of Congo in August 2016.

Hapag Lloyd will introduce  the "Black Sea Mediterranean Express which will be a weekly connection  between ports in Egypt, Isread, Turkey and the Black Sea Ports. The capcity of the4 ships will be 1,700 TEU with a higher than normal refer capacity. 

The first voyage will commence from Damietta on February 16. The port rotation is: Damietta • Port Said (East) • Ashdod • Istanbul (Mardas & Marport) • Novorossiysk • Odessa • Constanta • Istanbul • Izmit • Izmir • Damietta.

Increased checks on cargo - Should a new charge be created?


2016 willsee the introduction of  UCC - AEO   as well as the new Weight Verification system soon to be in  operation and this will require the agent/carrier to have a robust  system of due diligence in operatoin as part of their procedures. We are all aware that non compliance of these regulations  may result in a criminal prosecution and perhaps it is time for the industy to make a small charge to traders for this service.  These checked are often time consuming and expensive espeically if the purpose is   to reduce fraud and terrorismn which is sadly with us and perhaps even increasing.
